By the end of World War II, the German army had equipped approximately 50 Panther tanks with night optics. The first night vision devices (Gen 0) were introduced by the German army as early as 1939. Only the most highly trained soldiers with a well-rehearsed plan could take to the battlefield at night with any chance of success. Historically armies did not fight at night because of the confusion, lack of intel, and increased difficulty with communication. Each succession of newer night optics are called ‘generations’ with performance increasing and prices decreasing at each interval. The technology has evolved greatly since. Night vision devices were first used in World War II, and came into wide use during the Vietnam War. Many also include sacrificial lenses, infrared illuminators, and telescopic lenses. The term usually refers to a complete unit, including an image intensifier tube, a protective and generally water-resistant housing, and some type of mounting system. They are most often used by the military and law enforcement agencies, but are readily available to private users. In this article, we explore the history of Night Vision and the generational changes that have lead us here.Ī Night Vision Device is an optical instrument that allows images to be produced in near total darkness. During the Yugoslav war of the 1990's, Swedish Mausers equipped with these scopes were still a weapon of choice for snipers on all sides. They had originally planned to replace and retire the scopes (I think in the 1960's) but they were so effective and valued by their snipers that they continued in use into the 21st century! After the war these scopes were upgraded by coating of the lenses (a process unavailable during WW2). The Swedes used these rifles/scopes as standard sniper equipment not only during WW2 but long afterwards. These Ajack scopes were essentially identical to those issued early in WW2 to the Waffen XX in Germany for use on their Mauser model 98 rework sniper rifles (with a slightly different design of the short side rail mount to fit the Swedish rifle). Included in the German arms supplies were a number of very high quality 4 x 90 Ajack sniper scopes with matching short side rail mounts to be used on the "Swedish Mauser" in service in Sweden. For those that are not aware of the history, early in World War 2 the Swedes cut a deal with the Nazis to trade mineral resources for military equipment. If you are looking at this listing I suspect you already know how good this rifle/scope set up is. This auction is for a scope rig (Scope + Mount + Carry Tin with strap) designed to be used with a Swedish Mauser sniper rifle (Swedish model designation 41B).
